At the base of Beaver Creek, Avon is devoted to summer outdoor recreation and family events, much of it FREE. You just can't miss with the expansive Nottingham Park and Lake - romp in the fields and playgrounds, jump on a paddle boat. Everybody flocks there for the thrilling 4th of July fireworks display, legendary in Colorado.
The Beaver Creek Rodeo saddles up on the east side of town during summer evenings, a tribute to the Vail Valley's western heritage.
A pedestrian path borders the untamed Eagle River, the ideal spot to watch kayakers play in the whitewater park.
Avon is the Vail Valley's commercial hub. Informal and centralized, it's the go-to place for staples, supplies and sporting goods. Good mixes of lodging, including hotels, condos and private rentals are close at hand, with good bang for the buck. The dining choices are plentiful.
Getting around is effortless. You can hoof it - it's the best way to view Avon's dramatic public sculptures - or jump on the free town bus.
